Early life and background[edit]

Wurtzbach was born in the German city of Stuttgart to a German father and Filipino mother. Her middle name "Alonzo" is her mother's maiden name which is a naming practice in the Philippines and based upon Spanish naming customs. From Iligan City, she later moved to Cagayan de Oro City[9] in the country's Northern Mindanao region where she attended kindergarten at Kong Hua School and primary school at Corpus Christi.[10] Her parents separated when she was 11 years old and she became the family's main money-earner until the age of 18 by doing modeling and acting.[6] After being raised in the Philippines, she spent several years in England.[11] She finished her secondary education at ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center in Quezon CityMetro Manila and studied culinary arts at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies in San Juan, Metro Manila.[12][13][14] Wurtzbach speaks fluent Cebuano, English and Tagalog.[15] She also speaks basic German, describing it as "Enough to get myself a bratwurst".[16][17]

Wurtzbach is a professional model, actress, host and TV personality. She began acting at age four under the stage name Pia Romero.[18] Managed by ABS-CBN Corporation's talent agency, Star Magic, she was included on the Star Circle Batch 11. Among her TV credits are the teen-oriented series K2BU, the concert variety program ASAP, the romance anthology Your Song, the sitcom show Bora, and the drama series Sa Piling Mo.[14][19][20][21] She appeared in films such as Kung Ako Na Lang Sana (2003), All My Life (2004), and All About Love (2006).[19] She went on to become a stylist, makeup artist and beauty writer for Philippine Daily Inquirer's 2bU section.[12][22]

Binibining Pilipinas[edit]

Wurtzbach joined the Binibining Pilipinas Pageant three times before winning the Binibining Pilipinas Universe title. During Binibining Pilipinas 2013, she was named as the first Runner-up because she took fifth place.[23] She joined the Binibining Pilipinas 2014, but only placed in the top 15.[24] A controversy erupted when she failed to win any title following her question-and-answer portion.[11] She was asked a question in Tagalog by a Filipino judge, Senator Sonny Angara, which she answered in Tagalog.[11] Online commentators wondered if the question and answer in Tagalog cost her points from the international judges and, therefore, any title that year.[11] On her third attempt for the title in 2015, she won the highest title, Miss Universe Philippines, and went on to compete in the Miss Universe 2015 Pageant.[25]

Wurtzbach represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe 2015 held on December 20, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. At the end of the show, host Steve Harveymistakenly announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez as the winner. However, after Gutiérrez's crowning, Harvey returned to the stage and stated that he had misread the results and that Wurtzbach was really Miss Universe 2015. Paulina Vega (Miss Universe 2014) then removed the crown from Gutiérrez's head and placed it on Wurtzbach's head.[26]

During the first question and answer round, Wurtzbach was asked by host Steve Harvey: "Earlier this year, there was a controversy in the Philippines about the United States reopening of military base in your country. Do you think the United States should have a military presence in your country?", Wurtzbach answered:[27]

“I think that the United States and the Philippines have always had a good relationship with each other. We were colonized by the Americans and we have their culture in our traditions even up to this day and I think that we're very welcoming with the Americans. And I don't see any problem with that at all.”

In the final question and answer portion, the top three contestants were asked the same question by Harvey: "Why should you be the next Miss Universe?" and she replied:[27]

“To be a Miss Universe is both an honor and responsibility. If I were to be Miss Universe, I will use my voice to influence the youth, and I would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness that is timely and relevant to my country which is the Philippines. I want to show the world, the universe rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart. Thank you.”

Wurtzbach is the third Miss Universe from the Philippines after Gloria Diaz in 1969, and Margarita Moran in 1973.[28][29][30]

On January 21, 2016, she traveled to BaliIndonesia to shoot a commercial for C 1000, a vitamin brand available in Indonesia.[31] Two days later, on January 23, 2016, she arrived in the Philippines for a week-long homecoming celebration with visits to the cities of ManilaMakatiPasay and Quezon City. She also had courtesy calls to the Congress of the PhilippinesSenate of the Philippines and Malacañang Palace.[32][33]

On February 1, 2016, she arrived in San Francisco to fulfill her duties as Inside Edition's special correspondent for Super Bowl 50.[34][35] While in San Francisco, she was also reunited with Janine TugononMiss Universe 2012 1st Runner-up from the Philippines.[36]

On February 28, 2016, she travelled to TorontoCanada to deliver a speech against bullying at the Speakers Forum for the International Students of the Language Academy of Canada wherein she shared some of her childhood experiences as a victim of bullying. During her stay in Canada, she was reunited with Miss Universe Canada 2015, Paola Nunez Valdez. She also met and gave some advice to the contestants of Miss Universe Canada 2016.[37][38][39][40]

Tugonon finished her Pharmacy degree with Latin honours (Cum Laude) at the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas inManila and became a Licensed Pharmacist in June 2010.[2] Tugonon also attended the Ballet School of Manila as a ballet protégé while attending university. In 2010, Tugonon was titled Miss Pharmacy and Miss Thomasian Personality 2010 at UST

In 2011, Tugonon placed 1st Runner-up in the Binibining Pilipinas 2011 pageant. The eventual winner was Shamcey Supsup (her roommate). In 2012, Janine once again entered the pageant and won the title of Miss Universe Philippines 2012,[3][4] gaining the right to represent the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2012 pageant.[5]

Miss Universe 2012[edit]

On 19 December 2012, Tugonon competed in Miss Universe 2012 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, United States where she finished 1st Runner-up toOlivia Culpo of the USA.[1] Tugonon was the only Asian to place in the Top 5. Philippines placed in the Top 5 for the third consecutive year.

During the final question and answer portion of the competition Tugonon was asked a question via Twitter and read by judge Nigel Barker: "As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe? Why or why not?", Tugonon replied:

For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language – it is being able to influence and inspire other people. So whatever language you have, as long your heart is to serve and you have a strong mind to show to people, then, you can be Miss Universe.

To note, Tugonon is the second Filipino to place 1st Runner-up, after Miriam Quiambao at Miss Universe 1999.[citation needed]

Tugonon is currently now living in the United States as she pursue her studies. At present, she is a model of Vivid Entertainment. Two of her biggest endorsements are Wells Fargo and Walmart.[6] Her latest stint was on the newest commercial of Victoria's Secret Pink, the iconic fashion brand's line for college women.[7][8][9]

Personal life[edit]

Tugonon's relationship with Jaypee Santos was put in the spotlight. The two broke up in March 2013 after Tugonon reportedly began communicating with The Script's frontman,Danny O'Donoghue after their Manila concert that month.

Tugonon, together with Santos, appeared in ABS-CBN's "KrisTV" in April 2013 where she admitted to being a huge fan of The Script as well as her break up with Santos due to her communication with O'Donoghue, after host Kris Aquino publicly embarrassed Santos in front of the camera. However, Tugonon stated that he did not have a relationship with the singer and that the break up was only for the purpose of "thinking things over". Nevertheless, Tugonon received a lot of criticisms from netizens over her actions towards Santos on national television.[10][11]

Early life[edit]

Shamcey Gurrea Supsup was born 6:10 AM on May 16, 1986 at Mercy Community Clinic in Brgy. Camague, IliganLanao del Norteto Timoteo Ferolino Supsup and Marcelina Luega Gurrea.[1]

Supsup moved with her family to General Santos when she was three years old, where she was raised primarily by her father while her mother worked overseas. Before studying in Manila, she helped her father on a farm.[3] She topped the Philippines' national examination for architects in June 2010 with board rating of 86.60%.[4]

Supsup obtained her Architecture degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman, graduating Magna Cum laude. She had been a valedictorian in grade school and salutatorian in high school.[3]

Pageant participation[edit]

Binibining Pilipinas 2011[edit]

Supsup entered the Binibining Pilipinas 2011 pageant and won the title of Miss Universe Philippines 2011 during the coronation night held at the Araneta Coliseum on April 10, 2011, gaining the right to represent the Philippines at Miss Universe 2011.[5]

Miss Universe 2011[edit]

Shamcey represented the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2011 pageant held in São PauloBrazil, on September 12, 2011 where she finished as 3rd Runner-up to Leila Lopes of Angola.[6]

Television work[edit]

After being crowned Miss Universe Philippines, Supsup was selected to be one of the Hurados (or judges) in the talent show It's Showtime in 2011. After appearing on 18 episodes, Supsup left her seat to pursue preparations for her then-upcoming participation in Miss Universe 2011.[citation needed]

On September 12, 2011, Supsup was placed fourth in the pageant. Her success and popularity led to her return on It's Showtime as an occasional guest co-host, often filling in for Anne Curtis. She is eventually regularly invited return to Binibining Pilipinas as a co-host and made appearance in the pre-pageant shows and finals events from 2012 to 2015.

On November 2012, it was announced that the Miss Universe Organization had invited Supsup to join the Miss Universe 2012 team as the host of the web coverage for the 2012 pageant.[7] Her web series via missuniverse.com was called "On-the-Scene with Shamcey".[citation needed]

Supsup has also served as a host for the ANC lifestyle program CityScape.[8]

Due to her background in architecture, she was chosen to host the design digest program 'Interior Motives' on the cable channel Lifestyle Network. She replaced model and actress Angel Aquino.[9]

Ariella "Ara" Hernandez Arida[2] (born November 20, 1988), is a Filipino fashion model and television personality best known for winning Miss Universe Philippines 2013 and representing the Philippines at Miss Universe 2013 and eventually placed as Third Runner-up.[3]

Biography[edit]

Ara Arida was born in Alaminos, LagunaPhilippines to public school teachers, Estella (née Hernandez), of San Pablo, and Arlesito Arida, of Alaminos.[4][5] She is a graduate of the University of the Philippines Los Baños with a degree in chemistry.[6][7] Prior to winning the title, Ara competed at Miss Philippines Earth 2012[8] and was a former Binibining Laguna contestant.

Pageants[edit]

Along with her modelling stints, Arida participated in the 2012 edition of Miss Philippines Earth,[8] but was unplaced.

Binibining Pilipinas 2013[edit]

Arida was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2013 by Miss Universe Philippines 2012 and Miss Universe 2012 First Runner-up, Janine Tugonon and garnered the award for Best in Swimsuit at the Binibining Pilipinas 2013 pageant held in the Smart Araneta Coliseum on April 14, 2013. She was crowned along with Binibining Pilipinas International 2013 andMiss International 2013Bea Rose SantiagoBinibining Pilipinas Tourism 2013Joanna Cindy MirandaBinibining Pilipinas Supranational 2013Mutya Johanna Datul and 1st Runner-up, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.[9][10][11][12] Judge, Philippine National Police chief, Director General Alan Purisima was the one who asked her final question. Her response was:

One lesson in life that we, women, can teach men is being sensitive. Because we all know that men are more logical when it comes to decision. They usually are more rational, straight forward. Unlike we, women, we use our heart and we tend to get emotional in some of our decisions. For me, sensitivity is something that we can teach men.

Miss Universe 2013[edit]

She represented the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2013 pageant at the Crocus City Hall in MoscowRussia on November 9, 2013[13] where she won the 16th spot in the semifinals via the online vote and eventually finished as 3rd Runner-Up to Gabriela Isler of Venezuela.[14] Philippines placed in the Top 5 for the 4th consecutive year. Arida was also the only delegate representing an Asian country to place in the Top 5.[15][16]

She took on the challenging course of Computer Engineering with the help of three scholarships and graduated with flying colors. Faith brought her to a different path and led her to be a successful entrepreneur and a beauty queen.
